Portrait Process / Getting Started

Traditional Oil Portraits Starting at $1000. for a 16 by 20 inch canvas.

Contemporary Oil Portraits Starting at $3000. for a 30 by 40 inch canvas.

The process of creating your portrait begins with a conversation, either over the telephone or in person. We will discuss your interests, vision and thoughts about the commission. At this time we can also discuss the details of the creative process and the costs associated with producing your finished product.

The artist will begin preparation by arranging a photographic sitting at which time he will capture the subject in a variety of possible poses. This allows Mr. Bateman an opportunity to study each subject and develop source material that best presents the mood and vitality those individuals he paints. The artist will arrange this session at a time and place of mutual convenience.

In advance of the photo session, give some thought to the setting and overall "feeling" that you are trying to capture in the portrait and prepare to share your thoughts with the artist.

After careful review of the results of your photo shoot, Mr. Bateman will evaluate your choices and give you his final recommendations on the most appropriate concept, size and cost for your portrait. After this session, the basics of your commission will be finalized and an agreement between you and Mr. Bateman will be signed outlining the agreed upon costs and the delivery schedule for your portrait.

At this point, Mr. Bateman will begin to plan and paint your portrait based on the mutual expectation and deliverables agreed outlined by Mr. Bateman's Contract.

Additional discussion and minor modifications will be handled by mail or email.

When completed, the artist will provide to the client a photograph of the completed work for final approval. Once final approval is given, any remaining payment is due in full and arrangements will be made to deliver the painting. Paintings are usually hand delivered or shipped directly.

Mr. Bateman will assist you in framing your portrait with the hopes of matching the frame with the character and color of the portrait. Never underestimate the importance of the perfect frame. (Note: The cost of the frame is not included in the cost of the portrait.)
